Legal Nurse Consulting News: The Key to Legal Nurse Success

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Here at RN Market we get many calls from nurses who have tried to succeed as Legal Nurse Consultants. The nurses have a variety of issues, although some issues are more crucial to their success than others. If these critical issues can be corrected, the Legal Nurse will stand a good chance of having a rewarding career. Legal Nurses should keep in mind that each part of their business is a necessary support for the other parts. Imagine trying to ride a bicycle without the wheels...or the handlebars...or the seat. If you don't have all the parts working together, you won't get far on that bicycle.

Outdated/generic marketing materials:

RN Market has conducted research on the use of the generic business card. Many nurses have PAID to have generic business cards printed and they are getting little, if any response.

There is a reason the largest corporations in the world spend millions of dollars on advertisement and marketing each year. The reason is that marketing is an art, not a science. Science is what nurses know. Marketing is what must be taught, because it does not come naturally to most nurses. If you are not getting the response you want, it may be because your marketing materials are not interesting enough. What good is twenty or thirty years of nursing experience and knowledge if you can't connect with your potential clients?

RN Market utilizes one of the premiere graphic artists in the field to design marketing materials for our nurses. His name is Matt Orefice and he has experience working for large circulated magazines, corporations, and some of the top educators in the graphic design field.

For those interested in viewing Matt's artistic creations, Matt will be hosting a gallery opening at Ave. Cellars in Tampa, FL at Westchase on February 21, 2009.

Using a designer with Matt's artistic abilities and experience in the field of graphic design, your marketing materials will stand out from the masses and most likely get the attention and produce the results you want. Therefore, RN Market recommends that each Legal Nurse should utilize a graphic artist like Matt for the best possible marketing solution.

Fear

When you send out your marketing materials, you MUST follow up with a phone call. Many nurses become anxious about making the follow up phone call. Unfortunately, the packets by themselves can only get you so many cases. Attorneys usually have many things going on at once and might displace your marketing materials with other papers. Worse yet, they might not even remember you from your own marketing package. Therefore, a follow up call is a necessary evil. Lastly, make sure you wait at least a week before making the follow up call.

Once you have the courage to make the call, be certain to ask if the attorney received your packet. If they say 'No' respond: 'Perhaps the packet got lost in the mail. I could drop another one off today at your office.' This will give you a chance to meet the attorney in person. If they have just a couple of minutes when you drop the packet off, you can tell them briefly what it is that you do and how you can help them.

If on the other hand, the attorney says 'Yes, I did receive your materials,' respond; 'Great! Do you have cases currently with medical issues? We could sit down and discuss them, and I could give you a 'first glance' consultation free of charge.' Don't be scared to make that follow up call. Many times you will be the Superhero to the attorney, because you can work on the case they may have little knowledge about.

Laziness

Every nurse has something that distracts them from really investing in their Legal Nurse business. Kids? Work schedule? TV shows? You can make the most convincing arguments to yourself about why your Legal Nurse Consulting business should wait. 'Your kids come first.' 'My job is really demanding right now.' Or, 'It's the holidays; I really don't have the time.'

Why not be creative about working on your business? When you tell your children that it is time for you to work, lay out your business materials on a desk or the kitchen table. Then say to them if they want to help, they can. However, be sure to stipulate that there should be no food or drinks near your materials. Some tasks children can help with include: putting stamps on the packets, licking the envelopes, or even giving you a back massage while you work. This involvement gives the kids a clear message about work ethic, running a business, and it shows them your own dedication to your Legal Nurse Consulting business.

Furthermore, use the time you have to your advantage by multi-tasking. Put together your marketing packets while you watch your favorite TV show. Try to break the tasks up into smaller, shorter jobs, and work them into the time you are doing other tasks. This makes the work seem easier and you won't have to sacrifice a large chunk of time to get the tasks done. Don't forget to reward yourself after each business related task you complete . A little treat, like a latte or pedicure, can be a great incentive for reaching your goals.

The methods described above are the same ones used by Veronica and the nurses who graduate from RN Market's programs. If you are having any other problems with your Legal Nurse Consulting business, contact us. We may be able to guide you in the right direction.
