LEGAL NURSE NEWS: Propecia Class Action Lawsuit
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Merck & Co., Inc. for failing to fully disclose the serious side effects of the prescription drug Propecia. Propecia is a drug designed to reduce hair loss and generate regrowth in most men. Over two-thirds of people worldwide, experience hair loss at some point in their lifetime.
Propecia claims that possible side effects may be a decreased desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection and a decrease in the amount of semen. Propecia claims that these side effects occur in less than 2% of their patients and that these side effects go away when men stop taking Propecia. The Connecticut-based law firm filing the lawsuit, claims that the side effects are much more serious than these listed by Propecia, and can be ongoing for years after the customer has stopped taking Propecia. In addition to the side effects being extremely long-lasting, the lawsuit claims that Propecia can be responsible for sexual dysfunction for the plaintiffs, which in many cases, have led to mental and emotional symptoms, including anxiety attacks and insomnia.
The plaintiffs in this case, claim that Propecia has ruined their lives and that the side effects of this drug have proved to cause permanent damage to their bodies. These men claim to be experiencing the same problems up to five years after they stopped taking Propecia. This lawsuit proclaims that one of the plaintiffs had his marriage destroyed, and that his wife had left him, due to these devastating side effects. Another man claims that taking Propecia has disabled his ability to concentrate, hence forcing him to drop out of law school.
This lawsuit claims that Propecia failed to make the necessary changes to its product warning label, which would have made the risks honest and obvious to its users. Propecia has actually changed its warning labels in many European countries and failed to do so in the United States. By doing this, Propecia has knowingly violated the trust of its good-faith consumers. In addition, this lawsuit claims that most of the plaintiffs have been stricken with devastating, irreversible damage. These damages include, but are not limited to, breast enlargement, rash, itching, testicular pain, male breast cancer, and swelling of the lips and face.

Legal Nurse News: Veteran PTSD
(POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER)
The Department of Veterans Affairs claims that 60,000 US servicemen and women have been wounded or affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following their tours in Iraq since 2003. Approximately twenty percent of war veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq suffer from some degree of PTSD. A recent study conducted by Stanford University estimates that this figure will soon skyrocket to thirty-five percent. Due to a recent class-action lawsuit filed by combat veterans, many of these PTSD sufferers are having their previously denied claims re-evaluated.
PTSD may occur when a veteran experiences traumatic and stressful events while in service. PTSD symptoms are known to include flashbacks, vivid nightmares, intrusive thoughts, exaggerated startled response, emotional numbness and more. Following the result of the class-action lawsuit, the US military will be forced to pay disability retirement benefits for life to 1,029 disabled veterans. These veterans served in Iraq and Afghanistan and were discharged from the military without benefits.
These veterans will now receive:
•Lifetime military disability retirement pay - this may be more than their current VA payments. The monies will be retroactive to the day of discharge.
•They will be eligible to apply for Combat-Related Special Compensation; this could increase their disability payments even further.
•TriCare (healthcare) for life for the veteran, spouse and children under the age of 18.
•Commissary and military post exchange privileges.
•They will be eligible to buy life insurance through the Survivor Benefit Plan.
•Reimbursement for expenses incurred for medical treatment for the veteran, his/her spouse and minor children, retroactive to the day of discharge.
Regarding the settlement, plaintiff and Air Force Veteran Aimee Sherrod proclaimed, "It's getting your dignity back. It's a huge relief." Veterans are now permitted to hire attorneys to represent them for applying for benefits from the Veterans Administration. Prior to the class-action ruling, attorneys were not permitted to charge a fee for representing veterans at the administrative level. For more information on the Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Class Action Lawsuit Settlement, visit www.ptsdlawsuit.com.

Legal Nurse Consulting News: NEW POLICIES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
RN Market has been making big changes recently. In 2010, we introduced our new finance program! This system has improved RN Market's ability to become one of the most affordable ways to become an Advanced Legal Nurse Consultant (ALNC), as well as upgrade to the Elite and/or Expert Curriculum.
Over the past several months, we have noticed that our nurses are busier than ever. This has lead to a high amount of re-certifications and association renewals to be put on the back burner. We have improved our ALNC & IAALNI notifications by providing 90/60/30 day courtesy expiration emails. We will also give a call on or before your expiration date to make sure you have received your renewal options. This is why it is important to notify us if your email or phone number or address changes.
Starting on May 20, 2011, our new policy for ALNC expirations are as follows: we are offering a 90-day grace period to bring your certification current, with a $250 charge. After 90-days, you will receive a letter if you have not renewed. This letter states you MUST remove your ALNC credentials in the use of privileges, rights and entitlements once issued by the LNI Institute for your Certification. If renewals are not obtained within the 90-day grace period, you must contact RN Market for further instructions.
Our IAALNI Association is a great way to network. We do suggest that all members fill in ALL profile information as soon as purchased. When we have cases and need specific nurses and/or experts, we will search the Association website first before sending out a mass email. This is a "must", to ensure future job opportunities for you and your career.
These are a few of the new policies that will ensure and maintain our standards of practice for our current ALNC nurses. We thank you for your commitment to the Advanced Legal Nurse Consulting field and to RN Market. Please call in to keep us updated on all of your success stories. We love to share your achievements with upcoming nurses, who are contemplating entering this dynamic field.

Legal Nurse Consulting News: What Will Be the Outcome of the Crisis in Japan?
The catastrophic events in Japan currently have organizations all over the world monitoring the affects. Japanese authorities are currently planning a supplemental budget, in an effort to immediately inject money and resources into hardest hit areas. Officials are trying to apprehend the overall economic impact of this disaster. Meanwhile, the determined technicians and engineers fighting to prevent a full nuclear meltdown are at a disadvantage as radioactive material still seeps into the surrounding area of quake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant. Plutonium, radioactive iodine, and cesium have been detected in soil samples and sea water surrounding the plant.
Reports indicate that there may have been partial meltdown in 3 reactors. These reactors were in operation when the quake hit. However, they are designed to shut down when quakes strike. Emergency diesel generators pump water around the reactors to cool them down. The failures of the back-up generators lead to the damage encountered. The external steam suppression unit was damaged during a hydrogen explosion in the building surrounding the reactor, which is causing radioactive materials to leek in the Pacific Ocean. It was reported in March, 2011 that the water was contaminated 361 yards surrounding the facility.
Plutonium is a key component in modern nuclear weapons. Accumulation of plutonium in large amounts should be avoided whereas a critical mass will self generate a nuclear reaction. When inhaled or ingested in smaller portions, it can irradiate internal organs and cause lung cancer. If larger amounts of plutonium are ingested or inhaled, it can cause acute radiation poisoning and death. Long term exposure to plutonium may cause the particles to remain in the lungs or move to the bones or organs. These particles will continually expose body tissue to radiation and remain there for a long time. This will expand any form of cancer that has developed. Tokyo's Electric Power Company has detected 5 areas with plutonium in the soil. They say the amounts are small, but will need to be monitored to make sure the levels do not rise from further contamination.
Reports show that radioactive iodine and cesium have been detected in the atmosphere and is being washed down by precipitation. Cesium is used as a catalyst promoter, boosting the performance of other metal oxides in the capacity and for the hydrogenation of organic compound. Radioactive cesium will cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and bleeding. The long term effects are loss of consciousness, coma, and even death. It is very water soluble and can be spread through rain and currents. However, cesium when in soil does not rinse into the groundwater. It bonds to the soil particles and stays towards the top, thankfully not allowing it to reach plant roots. The only way cesium may enter plants is by falling leaves.
Japanese authorities have forced about 80,000 residents out of a 20 kilometer radius surrounding the nuclear complex. They say it could take 6 to 9 months to shut the reactors down safely. Meanwhile residents are able to re-enter for only 2 hour timeframes to try and collect their belongings. People forced out of the area are able to apply for compensation in the amount of $12,000 (US dollars).
The workers trying to get the Fukushima nuclear plant under control have reported multiple counts of insomnia, signs of dehydration and high blood pressure. They are at risk of developing depression or heart disease due to the harsh conditions and exposure.
This was a horrible disaster that will have side effects for years to come. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has increased the nationwide monitoring of potential exposure routes including precipitation, milk, and drinking water. However, Japan will need to strictly monitor these levels to help protect their citizens and prevent any more devastation to their survivors.
